TODAY’S GAME:
Arsenal vs AstonVilla

VENUE:
Emirates stadium

KICK OFF:
15:00 GMT
3:00 pm Nigerian time

As the first game of the 2013/2014 premier league season draws nigh……. where exactly are we as a team?

On the one hand, we were defeated, quite annoyingly by the Didier Drogba led Galatasaray.
On the other, we played Manchester City into a state of delirium, as Pellegrini could only smile as goal after goal dropped into his net.
There was an undertone of the Invincibles about Arsenal that day. All three goals took Man city completely by surprise, as if we were just to quick for them, and we were.

Having said that, we go into the new season with a starting 11 that could probably beat any team on their day, but(and this is a massive but)
WE ARE LACKING IN DEPTH.
Notice how I wrote that in Capital letters to emphasize the drastic nature of the situation we have found ourselves in, on the dawn of the 2013/14 season.

TODAY
I think that quick summary deals with all the major Arsenal business over the course of the summer.
Today, the premier league actually begins and we make our season debut against Aston Villa in the emirates.

TEAM NEWS
Vermaelen, Arteta, Monreal, Miyaichi, Diaby are all out with injuries of varying lengths.
Walcott is a doubt but may well feature
Ramsey is fit, after recovering from an ankle strain, and this is great news.
A few days ago, there was widespread panic amongst Arsenal fans that Ramsey may miss the season opener.
That’s the irony of life.
Just six months ago, every Tom, Dick, and Harry, demanded for his head on a platter, but the young lad, showed guts to overcome all the criticism and stand tallest of recent, in a midfield that has the likes of Santi Cazorla, Rosicky, and Jack Wilshere in it.
All eyes will be on him today to carry us over the finish line.
Everyone else is fit, not that there are that many left.

POSSIBLE STARTING LINE UP:
Sczesny,
Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs
Ramsey, Wilshere, Rosicky,
Chamberlain, Giroud, Podolski
Subs: Fabiansky, Jenkinson, Cazorla, Walcott, Akpom, Zelalem, (insert seventh person)

NOTICE FIVE THINGS
First, notice that there is no central defender on the bench
Second, notice that there is no defensive midfielder anywhere(both bench and starting 11)
Third, notice that I left an empty space on the bench, as I think we are out of fit players, so insert any other 16 year old of your choice, I already have two of them on the subs in Akpom and Zelalem. Gnabry or Eisfeld should slot in nicely.
Fourthly, Cazorla may not start because he may be jet-lagged and a bit worn from his trip to Ecuador.
Lastly, Walcott may not start as well, because there are doubts about his fitness.

And if this doesn’t point out that our squad is threadbare then I don’t know what will.
I would pay any amount to someone that can tell me why Wenger is doing whatever it is that he is doing.

I’ll stop ranting now and focus on supporting Arsenal today. When all is said and done, we are gooners through and true, and if you will be at the Emirates today, I urge you to leave your bitter pills of summer inactivity at home, take up your jersey, and support Afc. Give the opposition hell and come 5pm, we should be celebrating our first three points of the season.

See you all on twitter throughout the day. Follow @civilizedgunner. I ff back, and I’m full of life
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
